Raising Literacy Through Arts Based Learning
Partners in Creative Learning
In the Autumn term of 2016 I delivered a project at Parkhall Primary School in Stoke-on-Trent that aimed to raise literacy standards in a year 5 class through performance-based activities. I worked with the class to plan and perform an interactive and live video game. To build I this, in the Spring Term, I turned to playwriting and performance skills to build on the literacy skills of the class.
The outcomes were really positive. In both projects the class really took to the idea of independent learning, play and creativity. There was a change in their responses to literacy as the project progressed, most pupils were excited by the activities and therefore engaged in the content.
